How to Clean a Cashmere Knit Blanket?
Cashmere knitted blankets are perfect for sofas. If they get dirty, they can also be washed with soap and water. To protect your favorite cashmere blanket, here are some tips on how to clean it.
Cashmere is a fabric made from the undercoat of cashmere goats. It is very soft, warm, and very durable. Still, dry-cleaning solvents are tough on fibers, causing them to dry out and break. If you're looking to save your cashmere knitted blanket for future generations, learning how to wash your own cashmere may be the key to preserving it.
Clean in time
Once stains appear, treat them with plain soda water and a clean rag. Wipe off the stain without rubbing. If necessary, use a mild laundry detergent or baby shampoo to clean the stain.
Machine wash lightly
No need to wash the cashmere knitted blanket after every use. This just puts your cashmere knitted blanket through unnecessary wear and tear.
You can put the cashmere blanket in the washing machine if you choose to use cold water on the fine wash and spin settings.
Cashmere is sensitive to heat, so never use hot water.
Put sweaters and small items in a mesh laundry bag to keep them from tangling.
If the cashmere blanket you're washing has a musty smell from storage, add half a cup of baking soda to the wash.
Use only a small amount of laundry detergent designed for delicate fabrics.
Take it out as soon as the cycle ends. Do not put cashmere in the dryer. Lay flat to dry.
Hand wash to maintain quality
Fill a sink or basin with cold or lukewarm water and a few drops of mild laundry detergent or baby shampoo.
Add clothing, swirling gently and pressing to push water through the fabric.
Don't panic if the water releases the color of your clothes. It's not uncommon for natural fiber yarns to release dyes when wet, and once dry you won't notice any color loss.
Get rid of the musty smell
You can get rid of these musty smells by adding a quarter cup of vinegar when hand washing.
Let the blanket soak for 10-15 minutes, then empty the basin. The fabric can be heavy when wet, so take care to prevent stretching.
Rinse small items with cold water, squeezing out the water until the suds disappear.
For sweaters and other large garments, refill the basin with clean cold water and press through the fabric until all traces of soap are gone.
Gently squeeze out the water, but be careful not to wring it out or twist it.
If necessary, roll the garment in a clean, dry towel to remove excess moisture.
Lay flat or hang to dry.
Wash cashmere before storing to remove body oils or fragrances. When storing cashmere, wrap the folded blanket in tissue paper and place it in a clear plastic box or bag. Mothballs or cedar flakes are good moth repellants. Store away from heat, light, and moisture.
